About Paul

My son, Paul, is 14 years old and was diagnosed with Pre B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on April 18, 2016.  He was racing his go kart the day before at the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah.  The next day when he complained of dizziness, we went the local Urgent Care in Eagle, Idaho who sent us to St. Luke’s ER in Meridian who then sent us by ambulance to St. Luke Boise to the Pediatric Oncology floor.  After multiple blood tests, a bone marrow biopsy, 3 units of blood and IV fluids, we were told of his diagnosis.

Paul attends The Ambrose School in Meridian, Idaho and is going into 8th grade.  We are awaiting tests results which will tell us if he can continue chemotherapy at MSTI in Boise, Idaho or if he will need a bone marrow transplant.  Once this is determined, we will know if he can return to school this fall.

Why is Paul’s ALL unique you may be asking.  Even though ALL is the most common form of Leukemia, Paul has a few things that make it harder for him to go into remission (no more Leukemia in body).  Most people who have ALL get it when they are under 10 and have a great success rate with treatment.  In Paul’s case, he was 14 when diagnosed (strike 1).  He also failed to have all Leukemia cells destroyed by the end of the first phase of chemotherapy (Strike 2).  He also has a specific and rare genetic make up of ALL which is causing him to be at very high risk, (Strike 3).   All this means he did not go into remission as anticipated and is getting much higher doses of chemo than the standard treatment calls for and may require a bone marrow transplant.

Paul is a very happy-go lucky boy.  He is doing well in his attitude about his cancer, but sometimes gets depressed.  He had a really bad day where he had an allergic reaction to his chemo which means they had to change the chemo medicine causing him to be at the MSTI Clinic ever other day for this phase.  Overall, he is in good spirits.

We appreciate the thoughts and prayers of those who wish to ride in Paul’s honor.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Paul maybe in the hospital in Boise on the date of your ride, but we will do everything in our power to meet you at Draper.
